Sailing Lessons

The SailTime experience is exceptional, in part because of the quality of its Member training. Each SailTime Member has developed strong sailing and boat handling skills and if you don’t feel you have those skills yet, not to worry… we will help you get there! Whether you are new to sailing or just need to brush up your skills, our private sailing classes will give you the knowledge, hands-on instruction and confidence you need to skipper your sailboat safely.

A superior sailing experience begins with excellent training.

When you join SailTime, you receive private, personalized instruction tailored to your needs. Generally, new members spend 5 days (4 hours on-the-water) learning everything about their new boat. Not only will you earn a certification from the American Sailing Association, you will develop confidence and competence to take your friends and family out sailing.

Award Winning School.

The SailTime Newport Beach base has an award-winning sailing instruction program. We have been recognized by the American Sailing Association for running an outstanding school as well as having outstanding instructors. When you receive our training, you can have confidence in knowing that you are being trained with an excellent curriculum and by some of the best instructors in the industry.

Private Classes.

All of our classes are taught privately. Through highly personalized instruction, our approach is designed to give you as much time as possible at the helm. Imagine taking a driving class but not spending significant time behind the wheel; you would not learn very quickly, to say the least. It is the same in sailing: you need substantial time at the helm to perfect your skills. At our school, you can enjoy this time at the helm, with an experienced instructor at your side to guide you each step of the way.

Customizable Instruction.

Our friendly and knowledgeable instructors interview you to identify exactly what training you need. This assessment, coupled with the fact that the lessons are private, allows for greater customization of our courses. These two factors also make it easier for you to advance in your instruction since you are not bogged down by a group of slower learning students. In addition, if you are challenged in a specific skill, the captain can stay on that skill until you are comfortable and capable of mastering it.

Master Skills Quickly.

The power of private focus instruction from SailTime is how quickly you can master skills and advance to the next level. Most of our students can graduate from a novice sailor to a sailor with confidence and competence after approximately five days of classes. Upon completion of these five days, you could most likely sail your SailTime boat outside Newport Harbor–up and down the coast–to nearby destinations like Emerald Bay Cove in Laguna Beach, Dana Point Harbor or Alamitos Bay.

The SailTime Member Training Package

Our sailing instruction courses are significantly discounted for Members who join SailTime and sign up for sailing lessons at the same time. In addition, at anytime when you are a SailTime Member, you can take additional courses and receive a significant discount on higher-level American Sailing Association (ASA) courses.

Initial Training Cost.

The cost for new SailTime Members beginning their initial training is $1200 for five, 4-hour days of private personalized sailing and boat handling instruction. There is no additional cost for a second person to join the course with you. Therefore, if a husband and wife, a father and son, or two friends want to take the class at the same time, it is still just $1200—just as long as one of you is a SailTime Member.

As part of your initial five days of training, the SailTime Member will also earn his or her ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Certification, at no additional cost. If the second person would like to earn their ASA 101 Certification, the additional cost is only $150 which covers their book, log book, certification, test and ASA annual membership.

For those sailors who come to SailTime with prior sailing experience and/or certifications, please refer to the next section “What to Expect.”

What To Expect.

It is expected that Members will come to us with varying degrees of sailing experience. In addition, each Member will learn at his or her own pace. Therefore, the level of skills you acquire—and how quickly you do so–will vary from Member to Member. Below are some examples that will help you gauge the progression of the average student, over a five day class.

If you are a novice, with minimal or no sailing experience:
After 5 days of on-the-water instruction, it is generally expected that students will earn their ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Certification, as well as complete the SailTime boat handling and boat orientation.

If you are an intermediate level sailor with ASA 101:
After 5 days of on-the-water instruction, it is generally expected that students will earn their ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising Certification, as well as complete the SailTime boat handling and boat orientation. You will also learn about night sailing, advanced electronic navigation, advanced docking techniques, and advanced anchoring techniques. If a second person would like to earn their ASA 103 with you, the additional cost is only $100 which covers their book, test and 103 certification.

If you are an intermediate level sailor with no certifications:
After 5 days of on-the-water instruction, it is generally expected that students will earn their ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Certification and ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising Certification, as well as complete the SailTime boat handling and boat orientation. You will also learn about night sailing, advanced electronic navigation, advanced docking techniques, and advanced anchoring techniques. If a second person would like to earn their ASA 101 with you, the additional cost is only $150 which covers their book, log book, certification, test and ASA annual membership. If you and a second person would like to earn the ASA 103 certification, the additional cost is only $100 for each of you, which covers the book, tests and certification.

If you are an advanced level sailor with your ASA 101 and 103:
After 5 days of on-the-water instruction,  you will get a full refresher on your ASA 101/103, as well as complete the SailTime boat handling and boat orientation.

If you are an advanced sailor who has sailed regularly within the last year with your ASA 101, 103 and 104:
You are not required to pay the $1200 training investment. It is generally expected that after one 4-hour day with a private captain, at a cost of only $240, you will have completed the boat handling and boat orientation, as well as the advanced docking and advanced electronics instruction/review. It is also expected that the next day you’ll be ready to take your SailTime boat out by yourself. For additional instruction needs, we are here to help. The cost is just $60 per hour for a private instructor.
